Three Young People of the Present Day, 1856

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of three young people on a verandah, enjoying the evening cool and watching a fireworks display in the night sky. Dressed in informal cotton kimono, the two men sit near a red lacquer tray holding dishes of food and sake. The male at left looks up with a grin as he scratches his head, the beauty at right smiling shyly back at him. She holds a flat fan decorated with irises. The fellow in the center stares up at the orange sparks shooting across the sky, a shamisen in one hand and a cup of sake in the other. Large paper lanterns hang from the eaves above, and a please boat can be seen beyond the railing at right, the view framed by pine trees. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke I, Bando Hikosaburo V, and Iwai Kumesaburo III. A handsome depiction of a favorite summer activity, nicely detailed and shaded.
