A Chronicle of the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani at Suma, 1898 - Beautiful triptych depicting an episode from the famous Battle of Ichi-no-Tani at Suma between the Taira and the Minamoto. At left, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane wrestles with the young Taira samurai, Atsumori, who is just the same age as his own son. In the kabuki play based on this incident, Kumagai must decide whether to kill his young enemy or spare his life because he owes a debt of gratitude to the youth's mother. He finally kills his own son instead in exchange for sparing Atsumori. At right, Princess Tamaori, the fiancee of Atsumori, sits under a large pine tree, looking out at the waves rolling ashore below. She wears a beautiful orange kimono that has oxidized to a darker tone, patterned with flowers and vines, tied with a black obi featuring small green lions. Her long hair falls loosely over her shoulders, drawn with delicate line work. A handsome composition, beautifully detailed with delicate embossing on the white under robe, burnishing on the black obi and armor, and soft bokashi shading in the water and sky.
