Comments - Terrific portrait of a pensive young actor holding a carved mask of a tengu, a long-nosed demon or goblin. He looks soberly over his shoulder, his eyebrows raised, seemingly lost in thought. He wears a blue kimono over a red under robe with a pale blue collar, his hair pulled back into a thick topknot tied with white cord. The portrait is set into a battledore used for a traditional Japanese game similar to badminton, a feathered shuttlecock at lower right and a large decorative ball at left. A beautifully expressive image, with lovely shading in the background and fine wood grain in the battledore.
