Beauties and Children Enjoying Pastimes

Comments - Attractive scene of beauties and children enjoying a variety of pastimes. In the center, a young boy rides a toy wooden horse, holding the striped reins with his hands as he smiles over his shoulder at the girl at right, who is watching a woman fold an origami crane. At upper left, a woman leans over a wooden frame as she embroiders a floral design on a length of lavender cloth. Just below, a woman relaxes with a pipe after doing laundry, a shallow wooden tub at her side. Her sleeves are tied back with a red sash, and her hairstyle is protectively covered with a blue and white cloth. A screen patterned with peonies stands in the center of the room, the black lacquer frame burnished to a soft sheen, and a basket of pine and flowering plum branches hangs at right. A charming design with wonderful color and detail, including embossing on the white kimono trim and burnishing on the black kimono collars, the beauties' hair, and the black lacquer frame of the screen.
