Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene from the life of the 13th century Japanese Priest Nichiren, who founded the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. This dramatic triptych shows Nichiren's life being saved by a miracle when a bolt of lightning shatters the sword of the samurai about to execute him. At left, the priest prays calmly under the slanting rain, his prayer beads clasped between his hands, as winds gust through the samurai encampment, knocking over retainers and whipping up waves. At upper right, a messenger on horseback comes galloping up waving a petition to remit the priest's sentence. Nakamura Fukusuke appears at Nichiren. A terrific image with the lightning radiating across the dark and ominous landscape. A great design.
