A Picture of the Battle with the Rebels at Kawajiri and Takahashi in Kagoshima Prefecture, circa 1877

Comments - Terrific Yoshitoshi triptych of rebels attacking at Kawajiri and Takahashi in Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. At right, Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebels, directs his troops from astride his horse, gesturing with his sword, his hair tied back with a white sash. Other warriors rush forward on foot and horseback, holding spears and swords, one carrying a gun. Flames and smoke billow from the left, lighting up the dark night sky. A lively scene full of energy and action, with wonderful expressive figures, detailed with burnishing on Saigo's black jackets and boots. A great Yoshitoshi design.
