Ono no Komachi Praying for Rain, 1896

Comments - Fantastic scene of the famous ninth century poet Ono no Komachi praying for rain. During a severe drought affecting all of Japan, the emperor asked her to pray for rain. She is shown standing on a slope, her robes flying about her as she recites a verse from a slip atop a folding fan.. An attendant leans into the wind to shelter her with an umbrella as a shaft of light pierces the darkness and a few drops of rain begin to fall at upper right. At upper left, lightning zigzags across the night sky. Beautifully detailed with burnishing on the beauty's hair and the black court caps of the attendants, and silver mica details on the beauty's kimono. A striking interpretation of the classic tale.
