Preparing for a Concert, 1894

Series; Women's Activities of the Tokugawa Era

Preparing for a Concert, 1894 - Beautiful triptych of ladies preparing for a concert as a young girl watches from the left. The woman in the center holds a biwa or Japanese lute. Her kimono is patterned with delicate wisteria blossoms and birds. At right a woman warms a reed panpipe over a floor brazier, wearing a purple robe with a design of hand drum and flowers. The lovely folding screen behind them features a scene of a large drum ornamented with dragons and surrounded by flames, the background of the screen dusted with metallic particles that have oxidized to a darker tone. Exquisite detail in the elegant fabrics and furnishings, with burnishing on the hair, the drum, and the black lacquer brazier stand, and faint embossed patterns on the white kimono collars and trim. A wonderful scene from upper-class life during the Tokugawa era.
