Comments - Great kabuki scene of the nobleman Hirai (Fujiwara no) Yasumasa playing the flute as he strolls through the moor one night. His brother, the robber Hakamadare Yasusuke followed him out onto the moor, intent on stealing Yasumasa's robe. When he heard the beautiful sound of his flute playing, he became so enchanted that he followed him home instead. Here, Yasumasa grins saucily as he holds the flute to his lips, staring at Hakamadare, who hides behind his sleeve. Hakamadare has a worried expression on his face as he grips his sword upright behind his back. At right, Kidomarau watches with dismay, an ox ski draped over her shoulder. She wears a light green outer robe over a print kimono and a suit of armor. Tall autumn grasses filled the background beneath a softly shaded sky. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed with burnishing on the ox skin and embossing on the white kimono trim.
