Gathering Plants in the Palace Garden, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Charming scene a princess and her attendants in a palace garden, gathering plants for making a special soup, a traditional custom to bring health and longevity for the New Year. At left, a beauty leads the princess by the hand as she leans forward, smiling as she spots several of the herbs she is looking for. The matron at center bends carefully plucks the young herbs, pausing to look up over her shoulder at her companion. The younger beauty appears to be skipping along, holding the end of her flowing kimono sleeve with one hand. Her blue kimono features a design of carp leaping up a waterfall, tied with a checked obi in black, blue, and red. Small pine shoots dot the hills on the opposite side of the pond behind them. An attractive illustration of this time-honored activity.
