The Yugao Scene from Inaka Genji, 1847 - 1852 - Lovely scene illustrating Chapter 4 of the famous "Tale of Genji." Genji stops by a house in the country, impressed by the beautiful moonflowers blooming along the fence outside. The lady of the house has a servant pass some blossoms to the nobleman on a fan with a poem about the flowers, which are known as yugao, "evening faces." Here, the young prince smiles happily as he reaches forward to take the fan shyly offered by the maid, Ukon. A beautiful scene with the vines and blossoms twining over the courtyard fence.
