Scene from Imoseyama Onna Teikin, 1859

Comments - Attractive scene from the play "Imoseyama Onna Teikin," which tells the story of a young couple who fall in love, unaware that their families are bitter rivals. Each family owns an estate on opposite sides of the Yoshino River, which rushes through scene at right. At lower left, the beauty Hinadori smiles at her mother, Koshitsu Sadataka. Her mother has a concerned expression as she looks over her shoulder, a comb wrapped in tissues in her hand. Behind her, an alcove behind a curtains holds a variety of objects, including a black lacquer stacking container and a bottle. A blossoming cherry tree frames the scene at lower right. The actors are Onoe Kikugoro IV as Sadataka and Sawamura Tanosuke III as Hinadori. An interesting design.
