Night Attack at the Horikawa Mansion

Series; An Unofficial History of Japan

Night Attack at the Horikawa Mansion - Fantastic triptych illustrating the famous night attack on Horikawa Castle, where Minamoto no Yoshitsune sought refuge from his brother Yoritomo, who eventually killed him in his quest to become absolute ruler of Japan. Here Yoshitsune balances one foot atop the verandah railing as he fires arrows down onto the attackers, taking careful aim. A servant holds a bundle of arrows ready as his beloved mistress, the beautiful Shizuka, stands at his side, armed with a naginata and ready to fight. She wears an elegant purple outer kimono patterned with chrysanthemums, her long hair flowing loosely over her shoulders. A full moon glows in the night sky beyond the courtyard, where warriors clash on foot and horseback. A dramatic image with a dynamic composition and lively color. A terrific subject from the life of the notable Yoshitsune.
