Series; Modern Beauties

Entertaining a Child, 1895 - Handsome triptych of two older sisters entertaining their young brother with a variety of toys. The boy sits on one sister's lap, waving his hands and kicking his feet as she tries to focus his attention on the jumping samurai figure operated by her companion. A drum and drumstick, fox mask, and noisemaker are scattered about the floor, and a sort of mobile hangs overhead, a string of colorful balls dangling from the center. At right, his mother watches indulgently with an amused smile. Wonderful detail and color in the kimono fabrics and toys. A charming scene at daily life.
