New Song and Dance, 1883

Comments - Charming scene of beauties in matching kimono performing a dance along the back of a spacious room while other women accompany them with music on koto, shamisen, and kokyu, an instrument similar to a koto but played upright with a bow. The beauties pose with one hand in the air and the other held out at waist height as they move along the perimeter of the space. At far lower left and lower right, two young girls kneel beside the musicians. A patterned carpet, colorful walls, and red paper lanterns hanging over head create a festive air. An interesting design, nicely detailed.
