The Chryanthemum Garden

Comments - Lively depiction of the "Chrysanthemum Garden" scene from the play commonly known as "Kiichi Hogen." The warrior Yoshioka Kiichi fought for the Heike, but his family had alliances to the Genji. When he retired, Kiichi did not know which clan should receive the three secret books he had written on military strategy. The young Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) of the Genji clan joined his household in disguise as the yakko or footman Torazo to obtain the books. Here, elderly Kiichi grimaces angrily waves a stick at the yakko Chienai, who is actually Ushiwakamaru's fellow samurai Yoshioka Kisanta. Torazo can be seen at lower left, watching suspiciously out of the corners of his eyes, as he has already stolen the books. Large chrysanthemums bloom behind them, the blossoms supported with paper collars and protected with a blue and white checked roof. Nice expressive figures in a beautifully detailed setting, with embossing on Kiichi's white hair and beard.
