The Great Battle of Kurikaradani, 1884

Comments - Terrific depiction of the woman warrior Tomoe gozen battling with an enemy on horseback during the Battle of Kurikaradani in 1183 between the forces of the Minamoto and Taira clans. As her dappled horse rears, she swings around to thrust her naginata at the opponent behind her, while he counters the blow with his sword. Her long hair flies in the air as she moves, a quiver of arrows at her back and a sword in a black fur scabbard at her side. Additional samurai gallop up at left. A lively design with wonderful detail in the armor and weapons, and a rugged natural setting. Includes burnishing on the saddle, stirrup and armor of the warrior at right.
