The Battle of Ichi-no-Tani in the Genpei War, 1884

Comments - Terrific scene from the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani between Taira and Minamoto forces. At left, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane clashes swords with the young Taira Atsumori, who rides a dappled horse in the center. The youthful samurai leans over the side of his horse, gripping his sword with both hands, his horned helmet topped with a snake. At right, two enemies grapple on the ground as waves lap at the shore beneath the night sky. A great action scene, beautifully detailed and nicely shaded.
