Prince Genji Enjoying a Moonlit Night, 1867

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji and his companions enjoying a moonlit night in the garden. He grins happily as he looks over his shoulder, a pipe in his hands and a purple print coat draped over his shoulders. The woman standing at left smiles back at him as she gestures with her hand, a matron crouching beside her holding a tobacco set. At right, a princess relaxes on a bench, her red kimono decorated with large peony blossoms on the sleeves and flowing water and mandarin oranges near the hem. A full moon glows in the night sky above a river with clusters of yellow flowers lining the water's edge. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono, light embossing on the white kimono trim, and fine bokashi shading on the sky.
