Cooling Off at Shijo, 1892

Comments - Lovely scene of beauties enjoying the evening cool at Shijo on a platform built out over the water. Two of the women wade in the shallow water, lifting the edge of their robes to keep them from getting wet. In the center, a beauty leaning on the railing waves a greeting to another woman adjusting a hairpin. Behind them, a woman plays shamisen for some guests, while at left, a waitress carries in a red lacquer tray laden with food. A full moon glows low in the sky above the distant hills. An attractive summer design, beautifully shaded. The first time we've offered this subject.
