Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Awa Province, Naruto Whirlpools

Series; Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces

Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces - Published between 1853 and 1856 by Koshihei, Hiroshige's fantastic "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" series features sixty-nine prints, one for each of the sixty-six provinces of Japan, plus Edo and the two major islands. The series includes some of Hiroshige's most famous designs, such as his dramatic view of the whirlpools at Naruto.

The series represents a further development of Hiroshige's landscape print design, including some of his most modern compositions. The striking new use of a vertical format allowed Hiroshige to experiment with the foreground and background contrasts typical of his work, drawing the viewer in while at the same time implying a sense of great distance. The high vantage point of most of the designs allows for sweeping panoramas and expansive views of the beautiful countryside. Skillful bokashi shading also adds unusual depth to many of the images.

From bucolic rural views to busy urban centers, the series beautifully illustrates the Japanese countryside while capturing the flavor of life during the Edo era.

Yuyudo Publisher - In the early 20th century, the Yuyudo publishing house had already distinguished themselves as one of the finest publishers in Japan. They hired the finest woodblock printers and carvers in the world for this endeavor. The resulting prints were some of the highest quality reproductions ever made. We are pleased to offer this beautiful reprint from the Yuyudo publisher in our auctions today.  Yuyudo prints are exceptionally well done and very finely printed. Each bears a Yuyudo Publisher stamp on the margin or reverse. Bid now on prints from this fantastic collection!

Awa Province, Naruto Whirlpools - Considered by many the most spectacular design of the series, this fantastic design shows the swirling waters at Awa crashing over the rocks near the shore. The narrow Naruto strait connecting the Eastern inland sea and the Kii channel is situated between the island Awaji and Naruto village in Awa province. This print gives a beautiful view of the whirlpool between the rocks and churning waves. Awaji island can be seen on the horizon with a little boat in front of it. One of Hiroshige's most famous designs and a fine reprint of this beautiful image.
