A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Emperor Watching a Dance Performance, 1880 - Handsome triptych of the Meiji Emperor and Empress and the ladies of the court watching Shirabyoshi dancers performing. The royal couple sits on an arched verandah built out over the water, looking down on the dancers and the musicians. The two dancers wear flowing robes and tall yellow court caps as they move about gracefully, swirling their fans. The musicians kneel in the center, playing drums, a flute, and a biwa or Japanese lute. Blossoming cherry trees and large Japanese flags frame the colorful scene. An interesting subject from courtly life during the Meiji era.
