A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Wicked Magician Nikki Danjo - Great scene from the classic kabuki play "Meibuku Sendai Hagi" which deals with the disputed succession of the Date Clan in the 16th century. At right, the loyal nursemaid Masaoka shelters Tsuruchiyo, the heir to the Date Clan, protectively under her arm. She watches as her husband, Otokonosuke, attacks the wicked magician Nikko Danjo at left. The faithful samurai was guarding palace when an enormous rat ran by, and he struck it on the head with his knife. Before his astonished eyes, the rat transformed itself into the magician, shown waving his hand above his head in a magical gesture, his forehead bleeding from the blow by the samurai. In the center, a samurai wearing a black kimono over his armor frowns up at one of the ladies of the palace, armed with a naginata for defense. Wonderful expressive figures with fine detail in the hairstyles. A handsome triptych with lively color and a subtle burnished pattern on the black kimono.
