Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Chokichi, 1867 - Striking kabuki portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as the sumo wrestler Chokichi, looking up with a slight frown, his brows furrowed. The figure appears on the side of paper shade of a lantern, with a small star-shaped inset showing two seated men. A handsome design in an unusual format. The first time we've seen this rare Kunichika series.

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous mounting. Small loss, a few wormholes, repaired. Toning, creasing and wrinkling, slight soiling. Please see photos for details.
