Fierce Deity Appearing to a Monk Kuchi-e Print

The Kuchi-e Tradition - Kuchi-e prints are woodblock frontispiece illustrations used in the publication of Japanese novels and magazines around the turn of the 20th century. Most kuchi-e prints were illustrations of bijin and continued the tradition of idealized beauties in Japanese art. The subjects, however, have a decidedly Meiji era feel about them and reflect the artistic movement towards more western design. Kuchi-e prints typically have one or two folds because of their use.

Much interest has been generated in the subject since the publication of Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada's book, "Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints: Reflections of Meiji Culture." Kuchi-e prints have become highly sought after and collected by the serious collector.

Comments - Fantastic kuchi-e scene of a monk seated at an altar as a fierce deity appears before him in a cloud of swirling flames. The blue-faced figure has a bulging third eye in the middle of his forehead, and wears a skull crown. He holds a sword upright in one hand as he gestures with his other. Wrapped in a white robe, the monk faces the deity resolutely, concealing a small dagger behind his back. A letter unfolds from the low table nearby, caught in the updraft created by the powerful being. A circular inset at right features a beauty fanning herself, her kimono sleeve falling over the edge of the inset, creating a three-dimensional effect. Beautifully drawn with incredible detail. An amazing kuchi-e illustration and a terrific choice for a kuchi-e collector.
