Kyosai's Treatise through Pictures - Published in three volumes in 1887, "Kyosai's Treatise through Pictures" by Kawanabe Kyosai is both an illustrated autobiography and a history of Japanese art. Kyosai was apprenticed to the ukiyo-e master Kuniyoshi at the age of six and later studied with Kano School masters. He depicts himself as a student learning to paint and draw, and also illustrates works by other artists that he studied. Later drawings reflect his travels, his arrest for caricaturing government officials, the sale of his painting "Cold Crow on a Withered Tree," which increased his reputation, and other contemporary events. Although Kyosai is best known for his satirical designs, his drawings reflect a wide range of subjects, from landscapes, animals, and figures, to ghosts and deities. These charming and fascinating images are a great choice for a collector interested in Japanese art.
