The series represents a further development of Hiroshige's landscape print design, including some of his most modern compositions. The striking new use of a vertical format allowed Hiroshige to experiment with the foreground and background contrasts typical of his work, drawing the viewer in while at the same time implying a sense of great distance. The high vantage point of most of the designs allows for sweeping panoramas and expansive views of the beautiful countryside. Skillful bokashi shading also adds unusual depth to many of the images.

Yuyudo Publisher - In the early 20th century, the Yuyudo publishing house had already distinguished themselves as one of the finest publishers in Japan. They adhered to the same exacting standards of 19th century publishers while some of their publishing colleagues took shortcuts. In the 1950's, as interest Edo era woodblock prints was reigniting, Yuyudo embarked upon a project to produce reprints by the great masters from the Golden Age of Ukiyo-e. They hired the finest woodblock printers and carvers in the world for this endeavor. The resulting prints were some of the highest quality reproductions ever made. We are pleased to offer this beautiful reprint from the Yuyudo publisher in our auctions today. Yuyudo prints are exceptionally well done and very finely printed. Bingo Province, Abuto, Kannon Temple - Wonderful view of the Kannon Temple perched atop a craggy peak in Cape Abuto. Fantastic nighttime view of the temple, the sheer cliff before it dropping to the choppy waters below. The moon visible through the pine trees clustered around the temple. Lovely Hiroshige print.
