Series; Famous Places in the Eastern Capital by Kikakudo/Sanoki

Famous Places in the Eastern Capital by Kikakudo/Sanoki - This interesting reprint series jointly published by Kikakudo and Sanoki features some of Hiroshige's most famous designs, collected under the title "Famous Places in the Eastern Capital." The subjects actually come from a variety of series, including both "Famous Places in the Eastern Capital" and "Famous Places in Edo." Each reprint includes the same series title cartouche at upper right, with the publisher's seal of either Kikakudo or Sanoki in the margin at lower right. Beautifully printed with vivid color and fine line work, these handsome reprints are a nice way to collect classic Hiroshige imagery.

Yuyudo Publisher - In the early 20th century, the Yuyudo publishing house had already distinguished themselves as one of the finest publishers in Japan. They adhered to the same exacting standards of 19th century publishers while some of their publishing colleagues took shortcuts. In the 1950's, as interest Edo era woodblock prints was reigniting, Yuyudo embarked upon a project to produce reprints by the great masters from the Golden Age of Ukiyo-e. They hired the finest woodblock printers and carvers in the world for this endeavor. The resulting prints were some of the highest quality reproductions ever made. We are pleased to offer this beautiful reprint from the Yuyudo publisher in our auctions today.  Yuyudo prints are exceptionally well done and very finely printed. Snow in the Precincts of the Tenman Shrine at Kameido - Terrific winter landscape of the famous Tenman Shrine at Kameido, with small figures in straw raincoats and umbrellas making their way across two arched bridges, leaving a trail of footprints in the snow. Tiny pink buds dot the plum trees framing the bridges. Snow falls gently over the deep blue water, the sky a cold, dark gray. A handsome Hiroshige snow scene with attractive detail.
