Scene from Tsumoru Koi Yuki no Seki no To, 1850

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Tsumoru Koi Yuki no Seki no To" of the beauty Ono no Komachi arriving at the country home of her fiance, the nobleman Munesada. She is stopped at the garden gate by the evil barrier guard Sekibei, who at first refuses to allow her to enter. She tilts her head to the side with a confused expression as Sekibei glares at her angrily. She wears a straw raincoat over a pink floral kimono, a walking stick in one hand and her traveling hat in the other. At right, Munesada frowns as he overhears Sekibei, who has been chopping firewood, his axe resting against neatly tiled piles of brush. From left, the actors are Onoe Baiko IV, Ichikawa Ebizo V, and Sawamura Chojuro V. An attractive design with a nicely detailed setting.
