Onoe Eizaburo 4.5 as Akoya and Nakamura Fukusuke II as Hanzawa Rokuro, 1863

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait of Onoe Eizaburo 4.5 as the courtesan Akoya, the mistress of the Taira warrior Kagekiyo. After Kagekiyo escaped from the Minamoto following his defeat at the Battle of Dan-no-ura, the Minamoto commander Shigetada ordered her captured in an attempt to learn the enemy's whereabouts. Here, the samurai Hanzawa Rokuro has brought her in for questioning. Akoya grins as she looks up over her shoulder, dressed in a red kimono patterned with chrysanthemums over a red under robe, tied with a black dragon print kimono. Nice expressive figures. Includes burnishing on the black areas of the obi.

Image Size - 14" x 9 5/8"
