Nakamura Fukusuke I as Fuwa Banzaemon and Bando Hikosaburo V as Nagoya Sanza, 1856 - Handsome illustration from the popular kabuki play "Sanza Rotaku." Entrusted by his lord with the care of a precious scroll, Nagoya Sanza was banished from his clan after the scroll was stolen by the evil Fuwa Banzaemon, who appears at left dressed in a robe with a bold design of clouds and red lightning bolts. The sworn enemies are surprised to encounter each other one night in the Yoshiwara. Sanza stands before him, eying him suspiciously from under his large straw hat, wearing a violet kimono patterned with swallows flying in a rainstorm. The actors featured are Bando Hikosaburo V and Nakamura Fukusuke I. The inset above of swimming ducks and mountains is by the artist Gengyo Miyagi. A great design with expressive figures.
