Fine printing from the respected Tokyo publisher Oedo Mokuhansha - These classic designs were produced by the well known Tokyo publisher Oedo Mokuhansha amidst a resurgence of interest in ukiyo-e. Like many of these traditional businesses, the woodblock print craft was passed down through generations, and the Oedo Mokuhansha company was formed by descendents of an Edo era publisher. These are nice prints of the highest quality standards and an excellent choice if you are looking for fine old woodblock reprints.

Poem by Harumichi no Tsuraki - A terrific subject from Hokusai’s 100 Poem series. In this scene, day laborers are cutting huge blocks of wood into dimension lumber for traditional building. At right, a peasant woman balances a wooden pail atop her head as she leads her young son across a log bridge, pulling a pet turtle on a string after him. A fantastic slice-of-life scene from early 19th century Japan. The verse by featured poet Harumichi no Tsuraki reads:

In a mountain stream,
Built by the busy wind,
Is a wattled-barrier drawn.
Yet 'tis only maple leaves
Powerless to flow away.

A classic print by Hokusai and an interesting subject. Beautiful composition, nice soft color and fine shading.
