These terrific images include valiant samurai, brave retainers, loyal wives, and fantastic demons. Beautifully drawn with a wonderful sense of realism and finely printed with rich jewel-tone colors, these designs are a great example of Yoshitoshi's mature artistic style. A great choice for a Yoshitoshi collector.

Priest Helping Hino Kumawakamura Escape from Sado, 1887 - Dramatic scene of a mountain priest helping the young boy Hino Kumawakamura escape from the island of Sado after his father's execution in 1332. Suspected of a conspiracy against the emperor, the imperial court exiled his father to the island of Sado and ordered his execution by the lay monk Homma. Kumawakamura a made his way to the island, but Homma prevented him from seeing his father before his death. For revenge, Kumawakamura killed Homma one night, then escaped by swinging across a moat on a bamboo cane. He won the support of a priest, who helped him make his way to the shore, and through a special prayer, caused a fishing boat to return and pick up the child, carrying him to safety. Here, the priest runs along the beach as waves crash upon the shore, the child clinging to his back, mouth open wide. A great image from this famous tale, detailed with embossing in the white pom-poms on the monk's robe.
