Series; Flowers of Edo, Excitement at Night
Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as a Fireman, 1860 - Handsome kabuki portrait of an actor in the role of a fireman on his way to a fire at night. He wears a beautifully quilted fireman's jacket patterned with peony blossoms and curling lion fur. He looks up over his shoulder with a slightly worried expression, watching as other fireman hurry behind him carrying glowing paper lanterns. Hand-applied dark red pigment is spattered across the dark night sky to represent ashes or embers drifting from the fire. Wonderful detail in the intricate quilting.
