Original Kunitoshi (1847 - 1899) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sightseeing on the Sumida River, 1879

Comments - Charming depiction of ladies of the Imperial court enjoying an outing along the Sumida River to view the blossoming cherry trees. In the center, two women escort a princess, leading her by the hands, as another woman shelters her with an umbrella. The women wear elegant kimono over white robes tucked into full red pants, and each has her hair pulled back into a long ponytail. The spots on their foreheads are "moth's wing" eyebrows that became fashionable during the Heian era. At upper left, Mt. Fuji can be seen in the distance. An attractive spring scene.

Artist - Kunitoshi (1847 - 1899)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 3/4" + margins as shown
