Beauty Leaping to Her Death, 1852

Comments - Unusual kabuki scene of the beauty Tajimaya Onatsu leaping to her death from a bridge. She falls through the air at right, her hands clasped together in prayer and her feet tucked up beneath her. In the boat below, the seated Asahina Tobei frowns with alarm as he thrusts out his hand in a stopping motion. At left, the boatman Kenkaya Gorokichi grimaces unhappily as he looks on. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kojiro IV, Bando Hikosaburo IV, and Onoe Baiko IV. A handsome setting with waves undulating against the boat and willow branches framing the pilings of the bridge. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection.
