Series; Comparisons for the Thirty-six Poets, 1852

Iwai Kumesaburo III as Kumagai's Wife, Sagami - Terrific kabuki portrait of the actor Iwai Kumesaburo III as the beauty Sagami, the wife of the warrior Kumagai. She clings to a large rock, loose locks of hair flowing over her shoulders and wisps of hair framing her face as she looks over her shoulder with an eager expression. She wears a blue kimono patterned with cherry blossoms over a red robe with an intricate floral design, her hair adorned with several colorful ribbons. A cloud-like border separates the figure from a view of the ocean, with sails and masts visible above the calm blue water. Wonderful fine detail in the expressive face and hair, and beautiful shading and wood grain in the darkening sky as evening sets. A great design.
