Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Miyakodori Nagare no Shiranami" featuring Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Minezo and Bando Shuka I as Yoshida Matsuwakamaru. Yoshiwakamaru had been masquerading as both a courtesan and a bandit to recover a precious family scroll. In the final act, he is shown handily fighting off a group of policemen while calmly partaking of a meal served by his attendant, Minezo. He flips one attacker over his shoulder while smiling and taking a bowl from the tray offered him by his servant. Minezo stares up at him in astonishment, another policeman lying on his back behind him with his legs in the air. A great image with expressive figures and wonderful detail in the rather shabby household setting, with cracks in the plaster and broken bamboo poles in the window.
