Ono no Komachi and Angry Nobleman, 1889

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring the Heian era beauty and poet Ono no Komachi at right, holding a folding fan up beside her head as she watches the nobleman behind her grimacing angrily. He wears a black robe with a beautiful burnished lozenge pattern and a tall court cap, gripping a sword in one hand and holding a staff of office in the other. The archer seated below him looks up with a frown, while at lower right, a monk offers the beauty a poem slip. An attractive design with colorful figures set off by a golden yellow background.
