Comments - Charming image of courtesans and their kamuro or child apprentices in a teahouse in the New Yoshiwara at Sumicho, the "corner district," which leads into the central avenue of Nakanocho. The beauty in the center wears a white outer kimono patterned with lions over a red under robe, tied with a black obi featuring colorful peonies. Her kamuro wears a matching robe and holds a lacquer box, smiling as she gestures at the courtesan at right. The woman at left holds a tiny shuttlecock for a New Year's game similar to badminton called hanetsuki, while the girl before her carries a battledore. A traditional holiday display of pine and bamboo frames the scene at left. An attractive design, nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars and trim, and delicate cloth embossing on the white kimono in the center.
