Comments - Fantastic scene of the notorious bandit Kidomaru attacking Raiko (Minamoto no Yorimitsu). The feared Kidomaru had lain in wait for Raiko and his retainers to pass through the country, springing up from his hiding place in the tall grass as they approached. Two of Raiko's loyal samurai struggle to restrain the robber, who is depicted as an enormous man with shaggy wild hair and dark blue skin. One grabs him around the neck as another wraps his arm around the attacker's leg. A third samurai has tumbled backwards, clutching one of the bandit's sleeves. From astride his dappled horse, Raiko raises his sword threateningly overhead, ready to swing as his fourth retainer places himself between Kidomaru and his master. A great atmospheric setting in the desolate countryside, with grasses waving in the wind at the edge of a pond. A dramatic image from this legendary tale in the life of the brave Raiko, who triumphs over Kidomaru, cutting off his head. Wonderful detail and fine expressive faces in this terrific Kuniyoshi triptych.
