Performances of Ichikawa Danjuro IX, 1875

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting Ichikawa Danjuro IX in a number of famous kabuki roles. At lower right, he plays Oboshi Yuranosuke, the leader of the 47 ronin, dressed for the night attack on Moronao's mansion. At top center, he portrays the warrior monk Benkei in "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), grimacing angrily and clutching a string of prayer beads in his outstretched hand. At upper left, he appears as a bearded rogue with shaggy hair atop his head above tight curls, grimacing with rage as he grips a small log. Nice expressive figures surrounded by the three concentric rice measure crest of the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. Beautifully detailed with a burnished lozenge and cloud pattern on the black robe at bottom center, burnishing on the black kimono and court caps, and a burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono at upper right.
