New Play at the Kabuki-za, 1899

Comments - Terrific scene from the famous play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho) at the Kabuki-za or Kabuki Theater. Yoshitsune and his men, including his loyal retainer Benkei, have disguised themselves as yamabushi or mountain monks to cross the border. Here, they are confronted by the nobleman Togashi Saemon, who has been charged with intercepting them. They tell him they are collecting funds for temple restoration, so the suspicious nobleman asks Benkei to read a list of the contributors. Thinking quickly, he reads a fake subscription list from a scroll. Here Benkei angrily snatches the scroll away from the prying eyes of Togashi. The young Yoshitsune stands at left, holding a walking staff and woven hat. The actors include Nakamura Fukusuke as Yoshitsune, Ichikawa Danjuro as Benkei, and Onoe Kikugoro as Togashi. Nice large figures and fine burnishing on the black court cap. A classic kabuki subject.
