The Satsuma Rebellion, 1877

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of Imperial Army troops battling rebel samurai. The samurai rush forward on foot from the right, encountering officers and soldiers on horseback. Several rebels are already wounded, lying in the reeds and grasses beneath the galloping horses, but the warriors press on, gripping swords and spears with fierce determination. In the center, a shell explodes in an enormous burst of flames and smoke, partially obscuring the castle in the distance. At right, a soldier holds a Japanese flag in one hand while brandishing a sword in the other. Red name cartouches identify the samurai, while yellow cartouches identify the soldiers. A dynamic image with expressive figures and a detailed setting.
