Comments - Fantastic illustration from the siege of Osaka Castle in 1614 of the samurai Sanada Yukimura hunting for Tokugawa Ieyasu in the snow. Sanada Yukimura was one of the leading general of the Toyotomi clan, defending the castle against the Tokugawa Shogunate. Here, he gallops on horseback across the snowy landscape, pausing his horse behind a clump of reeds beneath a tree. Yukimura peers intently at the clump, prodding it with his spear as startled geese take to the air. Tokugawa Ieyasu and another warrior are hidden at left, crouching on the ground, the warrior sheltering Ieyasu with his body against possible attack. At right, Iwabuchi Chikara approaches on a brown horse, riding along the edge of a pond. In the distance behind him, figures in silhouette can be seen fighting under colorful red and green standards. A dramatic image with the figures and snow contrasting against a deep blue night sky. A handsome composition.
