A Horrible Suicide: A Woman Slays Her Child then Kills Herself, No. 808 - The Kanayomi Newspaper - The short-lived Kanayomi Newspaper (Kanayomi shimbun) was founded in Yokohama in 1875 and later moved to Tokyo. The small newspaper was quite popular from late 1876 to 1879, featuring sensationalized stories like other Meiji era newspapers, but it closed in 1880. In 1879, Yoshitoshi designed three illustrations for the Kanayomi, his only known works for that series. They feature individualized, realistic figures in nicely detailed settings. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has all three subjects in its collection. An extremely rare Yoshitoshi series and a great choice for a collector.
