Bando Shuka I as Torazo, 1847 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Bando Shuka I as the yakko or footman Torazo in a scene from the play commonly known as "Kiichi Hogen," a drama about the retired Taira warrior Kiichi Hogen and the disposition of his books of military strategy. The young Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) joined Hogen's household disguised as the servant Torazo to in an effort to secretly obtain the books. Here, Torazo smiles slyly as he holds up a lacquer document box containing the books, having obtained what he came for. He wears a purple kimono with a yakko's distinctive striped collar as he kneels next to a brushwood garden fence supporting yellow chrysanthemums. A nice expressive figure.
