Scene from Hitokanade Kodakara Soga, 1856

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Hitokanade Kodakara Soga" of a princess, a samurai, and a monk at the water's edge near a temple The beauty Tatsuhime, the daughter of the warrior Tokimasa, smiles happily as she holds up a banner with the Minamoto paulownia crest near the top. She looks back over her shoulder at the samurai Shimizu Kanja Yoshitaka, who frowns unhappily, dressed in a magnificent dragon print kimono over a suit of armor trimmed with fringe. At left, the monk Tochibo Hoin leans forward with a distressed expression as he tucks up the back of his robe. Stone lanterns lead to the shrine at right, which appears to have been vandalized, with sliding panels lying on the floor and verandah. Rugged rocks frame a view of the water at left beneath the night sky. An intriguing subject with a nicely detailed setting.
