The Sixth Month, 1847 -1852 - Beautiful triptych showing Prince Genji and beauties enjoying a summer boat ride under a softly glowing full moon. The young nobleman stands at right, poling the craft along, smiling as he looks at the beauty kneeling in the center of the boat. She is dressed as a shirabyoshi dancer with a flowing vest over her kimono and red hakama pants, holding a tall yellow and red court cap. The young girl behind her holds a hand drum, and another woman carries Genji's sword. At left, a girl peers over the side of the boat, watching koi as they bob to the surface of the gently rippling water. The red orange pigment used on the fish has oxidized to a dark tone. A palace stretches along the waterfront at left, with a stone lantern and bridge in the gardens at right. A lovely design.
