Benkei Visiting Yoshitsune, 1853

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene inside a palace of the warrior monk Benkei visiting his master, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. He kneels in the center, his head tilted to the side and his finger at his lips as he makes a strange, almost bashful grimace. A beauty reassures him, gesturing to Yoshitsune, who sits on a platform at right, regarding his guest with a slight frown. The other women giggle and titter, holding their sleeves to their mouths as they watch with amusement. A nobleman in court dress hides behind a standing screen at left, frowning angrily. Wonderful detail in the architectural setting and elegant fabrics, including burnishing on the black robe and faint embossing on the white kimono and kimono trim.
